島津第２８代藩主斉彬は、安政4年（１８５７）本丸から探勝園までの間に日本で初めて電信通信を始めました。線の長さは、５００～６００ｍありました。

Japan's First Telegraph

Shimadzu Nariakira, the 28th lord of Satsuma, began telegraphic communications between Honmaru of Tsurumaru Castle and Tanshoen in 1857, for the first time in Japan. The cable connecting the two sites was about 600 meters long.
