文久２年（１８６２）８月におこった生麦事件は、その犯人の処分や賠償金の処理問題で交渉が難航し、とうとう翌年７月イギリス艦隊が来襲して戦争になってしまいました。当時はここは万福山千眼寺であったが、鶴丸城が海岸に近く敵弾の飛来するおそれがあったので、久光、忠義（２９代藩主）父子はこの寺に本陣をおいて総指揮をとりました。その後千眼寺は廃仏毀釈によって壊されてしまいました。
